Phantom Pain

Phantom Pain by Katya Demidova is a poem-like photobook about the intimate emotional journey of the break-up, from pain and sadness to the acceptance and new beginnings.

The Phantom pain is a real painful sensation coming from a body part that is no longer there, the artist uses this term to describe the emotional pain and struggles of the break-up experience. The embossed title of the soft cover was created with a custom made slanted plate to create a unique and subtle detail of ‘disappearing’ or ‘phantom’ effect, also reflecting the ‘subjective’ and ‘objective’ side of human emotional experience. The open gauze binding is a reference to emotional vulnerability and attempts to heal.
